Exploring The Basics Of Landscape Painting

Art is an expansive field that activates unique parts of the brain that are often underused during everyday life. This is why it is very important to enroll your child in drawing classes for kids for holistic development. However, if your child is already pretty talented with the pencil, you might wonder if there is something new for them to master. This is where landscape painting comes in, a natural progression in their artistic career without adding too much complication. This blog will cover the basics of landscape painting, some do’s and don’ts, and the best ways to get started.

What Is Landscape Painting?

Landscape painting is a type of painting that features natural scenery such as mountains, fields, coastlines, countryside, and more. As you can probably tell, it is quite different from a typical drawing class and requires some mastery of color and striking a fine balance.

The most basic thing to remember about landscape paintings is the concept of positive shapes and negative shapes.

Positive shapes: These are shapes that are in the frame and at the forefront of the painting. They are clearly defined and sculpted.

Negative shapes: The spaces and objects between positive shapes constitute negative shapes. This includes skies, distant foliage, embankments, and so on.

Avoid Pitfalls

The biggest challenge with landscape painting is to strike a fine balance between the positive and negative shapes. If one aspect overpowers the other or is unevenly distributed in the painting, it can ruin the whole aesthetic of the project.

Focus On Balance

Therefore, as beginners, the focus is always on achieving that balance. Go for landscapes where it is easy to balance out the positive and negative shapes. This includes simple sceneries such as flat farmland, cornfields, coastlines, and coastal sunsets.
