Difference Between One, Two, And Three Point Perspective

In the previous blog, we explored the basics of perspective in art classes for kids. Be it sketching or oil painting classes, learning perspective is necessary to add depth to your work. The blog also explored the basics of horizon line and vanishing points. In this blog, VR School of Art, one of the leading drawing classes in North York, covers this topic in more detail in the form of one, two, and three-point perspectives.

Comparing Different Types Of Perspective

One Point Perspective

In a one-point perspective, the horizontal and vertical lines of the painting remain parallel to each other. However, they seem to be merging at a single vanishing point far off in the distance. A classic example is a point of view of an open road from eye level that is heading off far into the distance.

Two Point Perspective

In the case of a two-point perspective, the depth is created by means of corners. Instead of one vanishing point on the horizon, this type of perspective features two points. So basically, when a viewer is looking at a painting, the corner of the object divides or demarcates the painting clearly. A classic example is a street corner or the corner of a room.

Three Point Perspective

The three-point perspective is the natural extension of the two-point perspective. So apart from two vanishing points in the horizon line, there is one more vanishing point where all the vertical lines merge. This creates the illusion of height as well as depth. A great example of three-point perspective is looking at a skyscraper from the street, or looking down at a cityscape from the top of a tall building.
