An Introduction To Representational Painting

As a parent, you must already know the value of boosting the creative side of your child. Enrolling them in drawing classes for kids, is an excellent way to get started, as it has major cognitive benefits. These beginner classes cover the basics of drawing, including shapes, contours, colors, and something known as representational painting. What does representational painting mean? In this blog, VR School of Art, an art school offering drawing and oil painting classes in North York, explores this topic in detail.

What Is Representational Painting?

In a nutshell, representational painting or art is a method of drawing wherein the subject of the painting is something concrete that already exists in the world. It can include plants, animals, people, non-sentient objects, scenery and so much more. The basic idea here is to draw or paint something that is clearly identifiable or represented in real life. For instance, a painting of a white ox is as much a representational painting as a drawing of apples placed on a table.

Types Of Representational Painting

Representational paintings can be broadly classified as:

- Realism: This is a type of painting that exactly and accurately represents the details of the subject matter as seen in real life.

- Idealism: In this format of representational painting, the focus is on presenting an ideal and aesthetic version of the subject, be it a person, object, flora or fauna.

- Impressionism: Here, the focus is more on the artist’s impression or vision of a particular subject or topic.

- Stylization: This is a process wherein the artist takes a real and natural subject matter and turns it more abstract and stylized.

As is evident, an introduction to representational painting is key in drawing classes for kids, as it will help them develop their artistic skills and tastes.
