However, these artworks are far more vulnerable than regular paintings due to the use of raw canvas. As such, learning to care for these artworks is an important part of mastering stained painting. Ambient temperatures play a huge role in the longevity of these paintings. It should be somewhere around 30 to 70 percent at most. If it is below 30, then the paintings tend to get desiccated, and if it is too humid, the chances of mould growth increase. Therefore, ambient temperatures and humidity levels must be carefully considered.
Stained paintings are also susceptible to degradation under ultraviolet light. Therefore, when they are displayed, care must be taken to keep the light exposure to a minimum. This means dimmed lights in a room are the best way to showcase them as compared to bright lighting.
When these paintings are directly handled, the oils and dirt from the skin have a tendency to cause some discoloration on the canvas over time. Avoid this by handling them with gloves when possible.
Accumulation of dust or dirt on the paintings makes them more susceptible to dust collection. So keep it dust-free by gently wiping the canvas with soft brushes or using vacuum cleaners on a low setting.
Most paintings are displayed on a wood stretcher. However, the acid released from the wood over time leaches into the painting itself, causing permanent damage. To prevent this, use an intermediate layer of canvas between the painting and the wood stretcher.
