4 Tips To Make The Most Out Of Acrylic Paints

Mastering any form of painting requires mastery over all forms of paint, such as oil painting, watercolour and acrylic paints. While oil painting classes are great to understand the interaction of oil paints, acrylic paints require a different approach. To help you out, VR School of Art, one of the leading art classes in Toronto, shares 4 tips to get the most out of acrylic paints.

How To Optimize Acrylic Paints?

1. Cover Your Palette When Not In Use

Acrylic paints are known for drying very quickly when exposed to air. Therefore, don’t add them to your palette until you are sure about your vision and colours. If you are taking a break from your work, make sure to cover your palette and paint. Lastly, don’t leave any colour on your paintbrush.

2. Don’t Overload Your Brush With Paint

While acrylic paints are quick to dry, using too much paint on the brush can have the opposite effect. Unless your goal is to achieve a thick, textured painting, don’t smear too much paint on your brush. Apart from increased drying time, it will also make it more difficult to master the paint. Just use enough to execute a stroke and add more paint as required.

3. Reduce Drying Time With A Hair Dryer

If you absolutely need to reduce drying time in your acrylic painting, then you can use aids such as hair dryers. Be sure to add it to its lowest setting. This ensures that the paint does not bubble or crack. For best results, keep it at least 6 inches away from the canvas and move the dryer continuously.

4. Be Meticulous When Cleaning Your Brushes

The last thing you want is the acrylic paints sticking to your paint brushes, which can very well happen if you leave the brushes unattended. While painting, always dab your brushes in a glass of water. Once you are done with your painting, completely remove the colours from the brush by tapping it in the glass of water. Lastly, use paper towels or similar products to pat the brushes dry. This simple protocol will ensure that your brushes remain pristine for a long time.
