To make the most out of your colors, make sure to keep the following things in mind:
Always go for colors that go well together to create a visually striking experience. While this is somewhat instinctual, you can also refer to a color wheel for more clarity.
First, understand what constitutes as warm colors and cool colors. Red, orange and yellow fall in the former category whereas blues, greens and purples come in the latter. Make sure to balance these out to create maximum depth and intrigue.
Choose a dominant color that will predominantly feature in your work. Add other hues to this dominant color to create an appropriate color balance.
If there are certain parts of the drawing/painting where you want to draw more attention, try to create contrast. Use two colors that are opposite to each other and yet complement each other to achieve this. A classic example is black and white, their monochromatic contrast is featured in many art pieces.
