Children's Course Ages 8 and older

Our beginner children's program is designed to help young students make their first steps towards becoming artists. It consists of introductory drawing classes for kids, representational painting, and composition. Students develop elementary drawing and painting skills, learn the techniques of line drawing and cross contour drawing and gain the elementary knowledge of form, color harmonies and paint mixing. Our program is designed to foster children's imagination and help them discover their talents as future artists.

Sundays 11 a.m. – 1pm.

Portfolio Preparation

Students looking to apply to art programs in universities need to have a diverse portfolio to be successful candidates. We will guide your preparation to ensure that your portfolio caters to the criteria of the program to which you are applying. Our graduates have successfully gone on to study at various college and university art programs in both Canada and the United States, including OCAD, Sheridan, Waterloo, and the Philadelphia Academy of Art.

Advanced Drawing Course

The advanced drawing classes at our Toronto location are ideal for students who already have initial preparation in the fine arts and are looking to deepen their knowledge of drawing. Students will practice drawing based on a variety of plaster models that progress in complexity from architectural ornaments to facial features and anatomic complexities. Practical demonstrations are included. 

Saturdays 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. or Tuesdays 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Landscape Painting - Beginners and Advanced

This course is created for students looking to develop their talents in landscape painting. The program includes the basics of landscape composition, plein air perspective, and the structural elements of landscape (horizon, trees, roads, mountains, oceans, etc.). The program also familiarizes students with the principles of Barbizon and impressionist schools of art, as well as the alla prima (or wet-on-wet) painting technique.

Students will work with landscape photos of their choice and with acrylic or oil paints. The program includes practical demonstrations and a lecture course.

Impressionist Painting

This program is targeted to students who already have some practice in painting and are looking to expand their horizons. Students will create an impressionistic landscape, still life, or portrait painting using either their own photo reference or one provided by the instructor.

Students will also develop an understanding of the plein air perspective and become attuned to the interplay between objects and their environment. The student will have a choice of oil or acrylic paints to work with.

Life Model Painting and Drawing

The course is designed to develop professional life model drawing and painting skills - from portraiture to nude. The professor will provide ongoing demonstrations of step-by-step artwork creation, allowing students to see the process from beginning to end. He will guide the students towards composing their own life model artworks that are structurally, componentially, and proportionally sound. These drawing classes in Toronto will cover the basics of surface anatomy, painting and drawing of the human skeleton, as well as form sculpting and the principles of color and tone.

Composition Course

The course covers the principles of organization that are central to a composition. The students will engage with a variety of elements including: stained painting, sketching, and subject development and structuring. They will learn the principles of arrangement to create harmonious compositions and understand proportionality, positioning, contrasts, and rhythms of visual elements. Different genres are covered, including landscape, figurative composition, and abstract painting, depending on the students' aims and interests.

Drawing and Painting for Beginners – 6-9 years

The aim of these drawing classes for kids is to provide elementary drawing and painting skills that will nurture and direct young talents. Our basics of drawing cover such things as the principles and terminology of drawing and painting, including line drawing, tones, perspectives, and composition, as well as an understanding of proportions and forms.
While learning the principles of painting, students become familiar with color combinations and paint mixing, develop their sense of composition and color balance, and learn the principles of harmonious element composition.

Portraiture Course

The course is designed for students who already have some experience in drawing and painting. At the end of the course the students will complete a portrait based on their own photo references.

The aim of these painting and drawing classes in Toronto is to help students develop the knowledge and professional skills in the creation of portraits. Under the professor's guidance, students will learn to use the principles of portraiture to create unique artworks and develop their skills as professional artists. The students will work with their own photo references and will choose from a variety of materials to work with. This includes sanguine chalk, coal, pencil, watercolors, and acrylic or oil paints.

Copy Painting

Copy practice helps students learn from the best classical art traditions and teaches them to appreciate and strive towards the grandeur of the great European artists like Rembrandt, Rubens, Degas, Sorolla, and the masters of Renaissance. Copy practice is also an important step in helping aspiring artists develop their skills and discover their own creative edge.

Our program fosters an advanced knowledge of classical artworks and teaches the specifics of painting technologies and techniques employed in their creation. Students learn from the variety of methods and techniques used by the great artists of the past and gain an insight into how the practice of visual arts has evolved. They learn to constructively analyze artworks and engage in practicing the techniques of classical painting, including the "three-layered" method, which includes ground layering, underdrawing, and painting.
